Do smooth collies have rough puppies. The Smooth Collie sports a short, dense and flat coat. Rough Collies are not a good choice for someone who is allergic to dogs. They shed throughout the year and blow coat twice a year, during which you can easily pull clumps of hair out with your fingers. The rough variety has an outer coat that needs significant care. Collies become unhappy if left for long periods of time without the companionship of people or other pets. Unhappiness can result in chronic barking or destructive chewing. Rough and Smooth Collies have a soft, sweet personality. They are sensitive dogs who do not do well in an environment with frequent tension or loud voices. Two serious diseases that are becoming more common in Rough and Smooth Collies are epilepsy and heart disease (patent ductus arteriosus). Hypothyroidism occurs in the breed, as well, at a rate of about 15%. Inherited deafness can occur in Collie puppies. Fortunately, orthopedic diseases are not very common in Collies. AKC Rough Collie Puppies. Our sole purpose when we plan a litter is to advance the Wyndlair bloodline and improve our great breed - The AKC Collie. Due to our family and professional commitments, we do not have litters frequently. We have always focused on a limited number of truly elite dogs.
For those who say dog breeders are producing puppies when there are already too many puppies. I say – people who buy puppies from me want collies (not just any dog from a shelter) and they want a puppy that has been reared well and socialised, that is born of healthy typical collie parents with known traits and characteristics. There are two types of collie- smooth coated and rough coated which has long hair. Smooth coated collie is becoming more popular among dog owners because of its low grooming needs and glamorous appearance.This breed belongs to Scotland and its primary job was to herd livestock. They form strong bonds with their owner and are highly trainable which makes them perfect family dog. Smooth Collies have been placed on the Kennel Club's vulnerable native breed list which means not many well-bred puppies are available every year which means that well-bred puppies command a lot of money. As such, with Smooth Collies there is specific advice, questions and protocols to follow when buying a puppy which are as follows: Quaker Farm Collies have exceptionally textured, thick, unusually beautiful rough coats in colors of Sable & white, Tri-color and sometimes White and Blue Merle. We do not raise smooth Collies. To preserve the extraordinary beauty of the rough coats of the Quaker Farm line, (exceptional for hand spinning!), we do not breed our rough coated.
Smooth vs rough is easy to tell when they are just a few weeks old. What type of rough coat can be harder to tell (sparse vs medium vs lots of coat). Sometimes you get a mix in the litter of different types of rough and smooth, in which case you can take an educated guess. Smooths even come in a variety (slick, thicker double coated like a GSD. We do not have any available puppies at this time. We could potentially have a few puppies available later this fall, depending on our waiting list, and we plan for more litters in spring of 2021. Puppies would be smooth and rough coat in potentially all colors of the collie. All of our dogs are tested for CEA, PRA, DM, CN, DMS, and MDR1. Collie colours and genetics. Rough and smooth collie standard recognizes three colours: Sable stands for any shade of light gold to rich mahogany or dark shaded red.. Tricolour is predominantly black with tan markings on legs and head.. Blue Merle is clear, silvery blue, splashed and marbled with black. Tan markings are preferred, but their absence should not be penalised. The Rough, as well as the Smooth Collies, originated in the Wales and Scotland region from the localized herding breeds. The Scottish kind was large, aggressive and strong, bred for herding sheep while the Welsh ones were small, friendly, nimble and domesticated used for looking after goats.
Unlike rough collies who worked in colder Highlands and often had to do it on their own, smooths work relying more upon human leadership and contact, which could be the reason for some subtle differences in character. Physically, a rough and a smooth collie should be identical, except for the coat length and texture. The Scottish version was larger and more aggressive whereas Welsh collies were smaller and much friendlier. Crossbreeding these ancient herding dogs with English sheepdogs is believed to have resulted in the first versions of the Rough and Smooth Collie varieties. Border Collies only come in the rough coat. There is a different breed, called Collie, that comes in a rough or smooth coat. Do some more research on breeds to be sure you are getting the one you want. Border Collies are very high energy herding dogs that need several hours of daily exercise as well as a great deal of mental stimulation. Smooth Collies also do an annual shed but will continue to have some minor shedding through other parts of the year. When do Rough Collies shed? Collies typically shed their coats in the spring – brought on by warmer temperatures and more sunlight. A non-spayed bitch (female) will shed 2-3 months after her cycle or litter of puppies.
