Light eyes have oftentimes been a problem for breeders of chocolate Labs who were trying to achieve dark chocolate or black eyes. Some breeders will successfully breed for dark eyes by breeding only black labs that are known producers of chocolates.

If a yellow Lab has two genes that encode for chocolate then the dog will have liver (chocolate) pigment also known as a "Dudley" and this can vary from very light flesh colored on a light yellow to a dark brown on a red or dark yellow. Thanks for the question. according to AKC breed standards, Labradors can not have green or blue eyes. Their eye color should be brown to dark brown/black or yellowish. I dont think that a dog with blue or green colored eyes could be registered pure bred. Just a bit more information - chocolates and Dudley yellows (yellows with chocolate/liver pigment) can have blue or green eyes as puppies which change to light brown/amber color when they mature. All of the dogs here that said they had blue eyes as pups fall into that category. It takes awhile to uncover puppies’ “true” eye colors, which can range from brown to amber to the rare permanent blue color. At First Sight.
